Devlog #5: One-Year Anniversary of Noxia Somnia

Noxia Somnia released 1 year ago today And we couldn't be more thankful for the community that's supported us every step of the way! Because of players like you, we've been able to continue development of the game into something bigger and better than we ever could have imagined. Which brings us to the news we have to share about Noxia Somnia: Ultimate Edition... Updates on Ultimate Edition With all the love and work we’ve been putting into Ultimate Edition, we feel that the game is deserving of its own Steam store page as a standalone product. This page will be going live for wishlists shortly - and we'd really appreciate if you could help spread the word once this happens! Did we mention that Ultimate Edition is a huge update? Don't just take our word for it... see for yourself in this new teaser trailer just how much the game has evolved. Everyone who buys a copy of Noxia Somnia on Steam before Ultimate Edition is released will receive a complementary version of Ultimate Edition as a thank you for your support. (PS: Noxia Somnia is also currently 30% off too!). After the release of our demo, we got some great feedback that we've put into Ultimate Edition. Players felt that Act 1 looked pretty similar in the Ultimate Edition demo to how it looked in the base game - so we’ve made massive visual upgrades to go along with the polished gameplay style. We’ve also fixed minor user experience issues that popped up, like some text boxes staying on screen too long. And now, back to our regularly scheduled devlog… The Reaper The Abyss. The End. He can take many names, but here, he is known as The Reaper. The Reaper is one of the new enemies exclusive to Ultimate Edition. And we honestly think he just looks so cool, that we had to show you a preview of his combat sequence (spoilers, of course!) More new abilities in Ultimate Edition We're bringing you even more ways to spice up your combat style in Ultimate Edition. Reframe is a new move exclusive to the Ultimate Nightmare d...

Devlog #4: The Level Glow Ups Continue!

In our last dev log, we covered the extensive rework done to Act 3 of Noxia Somnia for Ultimate Edition. Today, we’re diving into set dressing improvements for Act 1 & 2, along with some added animation and balancing highlights! Act 1 & 2 Reworks You can expect the worlds of Act 1 and 2 to feel more alive than ever in Ultimate Edition! https://i.imgur.com/rTPtbNe.png Better late than never for this party in Act 1! Every single room in Act 2 was reworked, including both the past and future versions. Combined with our improved lighting system, some areas are almost unrecognizable (in the best way!). Each floor in Act 2 now has a unique wallpaper color to help players more easily recognize where they are. You’ll also be able to hear and see rain outside of windows. Before: https://i.imgur.com/qNQsqfM.png After: https://i.imgur.com/l5BwBYe.png Animations Tristan’s animations are getting reworked to feel more fluid and responsive. https://i.imgur.com/oynAYTX.mp4 Before: https://i.imgur.com/r4K5eZU.gif After: https://i.imgur.com/HRfKvlG.gif Rebalancing We’ve refined the game’s economy to make progression smoother and more rewarding. Item Trades We reduced item requirements for trades. Bounty trades now require fewer materials, making early summons like the Scholar more accessible. Consumables Consumables are slightly more expensive, with steeper increases in Ultimate Nightmare mode—buy wisely! Cosmetics All clothing items now cost a flat 30 coins, except for the newly added Gold Jacket. Shard & Coin Drops Shard drops from enemies are reduced in early levels but increased in later levels. Coin drops have been reduced overall. Material Drop Rates Materials now drop consistently: 70% on The Nightmare/Ultimate Nightmare and 90% on Face Your Fears. Using Lucky Tea guarantees a 100% drop rate. Merchant Improvements After completing an act, players can purchase materials for that act’s monsters directly from the merchant—though at a premium price. Additional Changes The Greg Whi...

Devlog #3: Level Redesigns, Post-Game Story, and More!

In this month’s devlog, you’ll hear from Keenan, the lead game developer on Noxia Somnia and Noxia Somnia: Ultimate Edition! Act 3, Reimagined The entire level has received a facelift. The original was pretty rushed and unfinished for the game's initial release. In terms of content it was pretty solid, but on the art side I felt it wasn’t up to the quality of the rest of the game. Over the last couple weeks I've been going in and redesigning the whole thing from a visual standpoint. Improved lighting, improved sprites, and more. Keep in mind that everything you see here is work in progress. Everything is subject to change. Let us know what you think! https://i.imgur.com/ZkDqCGu.mp4 https://i.imgur.com/wV09Lsm.mp4 One of the visual ideas I wanted to implement in the act was having a lot of prison-like decor. Act 3 has always been about Tristan's fear of judgement; that by being himself he'd be mocked and bullied by the world around him. As a result of that fear he wore a mask, suppressing his identity and effectively locking it away to fit in. I've taken that idea and run with it, having large jail cells backed by a piercing red light, chains, and more to reinforce this concept. Some of the chains hanging from the ceiling now have physics and sound as well! This has no effect on gameplay and is purely for atmosphere. https://i.imgur.com/RVN5XuX.mp4 https://i.imgur.com/fo2fL2H.mp4 I've also gone in and redesigned the second half of the map; the Skylight Hall. I've decided to remove the old city background and replace it with something a bit more abstract; an ominous, glowing red sky with some gentle snowfall. I think it looks pretty good and gives the area a bit more of an oppressive atmosphere. https://i.imgur.com/JfNoEnV.mp4 https://i.imgur.com/o9JAqNI.mp4 There were also a lot of rooms in the 1.0 release that were either empty, or severely lacking in detail when compared to content seen in Act 1 or 2. For example; the pharmacy in the Skylight Hall didn't have any p...

    Devlog #2: Bringing Some Balance

🎃 Happy Halloween, horror fans!🎃 This new devlog is certainly a treat. Take a look at upcoming improvements to Souls, game balance, and UI coming to Noxia Somnia: Ultimate Edition in January 2025. General Updates to Souls A number of improvements and tweaks to souls are coming in Ultimate Edition: The Soul of Recovery is 100% automated! No more need to re-equip a healing item into your quickslot every time you want to use it. This Soul will now activate the strongest healing item available in your inventory on a lethal blow. You’ll also get about 5 seconds of invincibility after the healing as a buffer against extra-heavy hits. https://i.imgur.com/iFjFSXZ.mp4 Now with the Soul of Strength, if Athleticism II is unlocked, Tristan ignores all damage knockback/stun. It’s kind of incredible! No more hits in the knockback animation 🙅‍♂️ https://i.imgur.com/TB3nLkc.mp4 Felt like the Soul of Determination was in the F-Tier thanks to long heal times? Those days are over! Now, this Soul heads based on a % of your max health rather than a flat 10 HP, making it a much more viable option in late-game encounters. https://i.imgur.com/JBDKI3U.mp4 The damage reduction from the Soul of Endurance has been increased from 20% to 25%. We’ve doubled down on risk vs. reward with the Soul of Perseverance. You’ll no longer drop your attack combo from taking stress damage, but your defence is lowered the higher your combo is. Getting a higher combo feels pretty awesome now… but when you mess up, it hurts. Alright, we’ll admit it: Soul of Security was a bit useless in 1.0. It only boosted your defense at whole health, so you were…extra healthy. Now, when you’re below half health, you’ll get a massive defence boost. Soul of Bravery has been given some love too. It no longer requires 100% HP for its damage buff to be active, and is given as long as the player stays above 50% HP, giving more room for error in play. Ultimate Nightmare-Exclusive Soul Updates These Souls are only accessible when pla...

    Devlog #1: Shiny New Updates

Welcome to our first dev log for Noxia Somnia: Ultimate Edition! We’re planning to release these development updates monthly as we journey towards our February 2025 release date. Going into Ultimate Edition we had one major goal: to take the player’s experience to the next level, whether it was your first time playing or the 50th. That’s why you’ll see many quality of life improvements across our enemies, fast travel, and lighting in Ultimate Edition that greatly improve the base game experience. (We’ll chat more about our new difficulty mode for seasoned players called Ultimate Nightmare in a later dev log!). Lighting Enhancements Understanding the critical role atmosphere plays in horror game design, we recognized that enhancing our lighting system could significantly elevate the overall feel of Noxia. https://i.imgur.com/AaFB6HC.mp4 As you can see here, we’ve given rooms a more realistic, foggy effect with volumetric lighting. Rooms that used to be pitch-dark now have more depth. Old room lighting https://i.imgur.com/P8kmT4i.png New room lighting https://i.imgur.com/PbdzFNa.png Pickups have been given additional lighting effects and particles, and Tristain’s flashlight has been given a stronger battery (more volumetric lighting). Lens flares have been added or improved for many objects. https://i.imgur.com/ggDNX7I.png Certain sprites now react more realistically to light, giving certain objects like our vending machines a glowy Look. Glass and metallic surfaces have also been reworked to have a better shine. Old vending machine https://i.imgur.com/9Bttbxk.png New vending machine https://i.imgur.com/IJer1hg.png Enemy Improvements For the base game release, some enemy ideas didn’t quite make the final cut. One of those was our Bully frenemy here, who got stuck with a recycled NPC design. https://i.imgur.com/qtf0qMc.png We’re happy to share that the Bully is now…the fearsome Bruiser! https://i.imgur.com/vkZfL9R.mp4 The Scholar has also been given the menacing design...
