Explore the mystical depths of Colossal Cave VR, where retro charm meets modern exploration. Crafted by Cygnus Entertainment and featuring original designs by Roberta Williams, this casual adventure game brings vintage puzzles to life in virtual reality.

About this game

Colossal Cave 3D is a classic, cozy VR Adventure; slow down, explore a massive magical, labyrinthine cave system, all while solving clever, sprawling puzzles at your own pace. Auto-magic maps, limited inventory, all the fantastic creatures and a deep mystery at the heart of the experience.

You may hear its heart beating while approaching the volcano.

First-person POV VR with classic point-&-click controls: walk, look, interact, pick things up, and test your theories. Limited inventory requires clever management in its own right. A magical series of maps quietly track where you’ve been, marking where you’ve dropped items.

Simply focus on solving puzzles instead of wrestling with navigation.

This is not a frantic action game; no frenetic timers shouting at you, no combo meters to maintain—just you, your lamp, and a series of intertwined, sprawling, twisty corridors full of brainy, logic-driven challenges.

Take your time:

  • Try weird solutions. Trial and error can be your friend.

  • Double back to old rooms with new ideas and unlock potential new discoveries.

  • Follow that “what if I…?” inclination and see what the cave passes back.

The cave is quiet, but not without your footsteps.

You’ll bump into:

  • Mischievous dwarves with sharp daggers and sharper tempers.

  • A grumpy, red bridge guarding troll.

  • A noticeably absent giant.  You see that?

  • Flickering hinkypunks and other odd cave-dwellers. A handsome pirate, perhaps?

  • Hidden treasures, strange artifacts, and places that feel just a little too magical to be natural.

Some encounters are charming, whilst others are just dangerous enough to keep you on your toes—but it all stays firmly in “casual mystical adventure,” not horror. Just fantasy with a slice of mystery.

That said, all good Adventures suggest one should save early, save often.

Colossal Cave VR leans into that old-school adventure game atmosphere: colorful environments, shadowy silhouettes, bats, and a focus on exploring the world for clues rather than being led by the nose.

No lack of customization allows dialing the game to match your vibe with a variety of options, including comfort tweaks and settings.  Snap turns, or nuke the narrator.  It's all there. Play exactly how you like—curled up with a headset and slowly dawdle through the cave one cavern at a time.

  • Relaxed, point-&-click exploration in a massive cave

  • Limited inventory that makes item choices and puzzle routes matter

  • Handy auto-map that shows where you’ve been and where you dropped items

  • A cast of dwarves, elves, hinkypunks, and other quirky cave creatures

  • Dozens of logic-driven puzzles with satisfying “aha!” moments

  • Retro-cool adventure vibes inspired by classic games

  • Flexible customization options so you can make the adventure as meditative and away as you want

  • The mythic, mellow cavecation!

Venture down into Colossal Cave, follow your curiosity, and see how far your lamp — and your wits — can take you.

Colossal Cave VR 2.0: The Enchanted Edition

From the Desk of Roberta Williams … I am very proud to announce our updated Colossal Cave 2.0, our new ‘enchanted cave’ version! I have always admired this historic text adventure, referring to it as deeply engaging and captivating -- and arguably the spark that ignited the onset of computer gaming – and have desired for many years to bring it to life with beautiful graphics, atmospheric sounds, and characters of charm…or roguery. This has always been an enchanted cave which – beware! -- is also your adversary, and it was important that we capture that imagery and spirit. I am now so excited by our considerable efforts that I urge everyone to check out our latest release, Colossal Cave 2.0. My team and I have been hard at work the last eight months since our January release of Colossal Cave perfecting playability while also enhancing the mysterious, metaphysical, and immersive nature of Colossal Cave. Be sure to check out our recent 360-degree trailer on YouTube. Best viewed in a headset, set to 360-degrees!: {STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/44201598/2fca378771faaf287c352794e2388e599ca50a92.gif Ahead of this undertaking, I reviewed the many reactions to our initial release – both positive and negative. I adapted or corrected the unfavorable responses while at the same time maintaining or improving the complimentary ones – though always keeping in mind the essence of the original gameplay which, to me, is sacrosanct. As a game designer myself, I recognize a great design. It is my humble opinion that the original Colossal Cave has stood the test of time due to the innovative and imaginative minds of Will Crowther and Don Woods, the original creators of this classic text adventure game. When Ken and I decided to reimagine Colossal Cave, I swore not to change the gameplay and strategy of these two ingenious men. Although, to be fair, there are those who would argue that by adding 3D graphics, character animations, sound effects, or music – and even a point-and-click interface – that ...
