About this game

We Are Gladiators is a challenging turn-based RPG roguelite game about managing a company of gladiators. Recruit, train and command a roster of characters from all walks of life against ruthless gladiators, wild beasts, savage greenskins and undead monstrosities! Can you keep your men unified against the stress, hardships and horrors of gladiator life?

Command Gladiators in Turn Based Arena Combat.

Command your gladiators in innovative turn based combat across a hexagonal grid. If it makes sense in reality, it makes sense in the arena: stress, injuries and exhaustion must be managed as well as abilities, teamwork and positioning if you hope to prevail!

Customize Your Company’s Captain to Lead Your Gladiators!

Decide who will lead your men: an Elven mage? An Undead rogue? An Orc berserker? Customize your starting race, abilities, weapons, talents, perks, appearance and more to create your own unique story.

Recruit new gladiators from a wide range of races and backgrounds

From farmers, thieves, butchers and bandits to sell swords, knights, witch hunters and serpent slayers, build your roster from a diverse set of procedurally generated characters. Randomized stats, abilities, equipment, character quirks and personality traits enable you to build a unique band of misfits every playthrough.

Level up and build your own specialized gladiators

With each arena victory comes access to new ability trees, powerful passive effects, and increased core attributes. One day an axe wielding berserker, the next day a fire ball slinging battle mage! A gladiator’s initial characteristics need not define the type of warrior they ultimately become.

Manage the health, mental state and relationships of your gladiators.

Rest and relaxation is an important part of an athlete's routine, especially for gladiators. Blow off some steam at the Tavern, tend to injuries and mental traumas at the Hospital, and learn new abilities and skills at the Library.

Risk vs Reward: Choose which fights to take, and how to prepare your team.

Preparation is the key to success! Choose which matches to take based on your risk appetite and the capabilities of your gladiators. Know who you're fighting beforehand, pick the right characters for the job, and deploy them on the board in a way that suits your tactics and counters your enemy’s.

Choices matter

Decide how to respond to a variety of complex situations and disputes as they arise. What kind of leader will you be? Honorable and merciful? Or callous and cruel? Choose wisely, as your actions have lasting consequences.

Core Features

  • Challenging tactical turn based combat that pits you against a variety of diabolical foes, as well as the forces of fear, disease, injury, exhaustion and desertion.
  • Recruit, train and develop infinitely deep and complex gladiators by mixing abilities, talent trees, races, weapons, backgrounds, personality traits and more in a classless character progression system.
  • Strategize and plan off the battlefield. Manage the health, injuries, relationships, salaries and equipment of your gladiators at the Tavern, Armoury, Library and Hospital of the local town.
  • A rich story event system that has you making tough decisions to reap great rewards, or terrible consequences.
  • Equipment that matters: Equip your men with a variety of weapons, armor pieces and trinkets that give them unique abilities and traits. Stun enemies with hammers, split shields with axes, parry attacks with swords, and huddle together under a shield wall.
  • Classic RPG roguelite features including permanent death and injuries. Procedurally generated gladiators, enemies, story events and rewards guarantee incredible replay value.

Fortnightly Update #4: New Enemies, Items, and ‘Quality Of Life’ Features.

Greetings Gladiators! Two weeks ago, the team completed all the tasks, features and requirements we planned out for ourselves for version 7 of the game. With the completion of this milestone, we decided to reflect upon the state of the game and ask ourselves “Where is the fun, and where are the pain points? What parts of the game feel great, and what needs work? What are players saying positively or negatively with consistency?” . We spent the last 2 weeks methodically reviewing every aspect, feature, ability, character and enemy in the game, then removing and/or adjusting everything, and also adding a lot of new content. We’re happy to announce a swathe of new enemies have come to the arena! The Undead {STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/44335286/9249efb670d8227a07171dee79c91926e52caf24.jpg Introducing the Shambler, Armoured Shambler, Mind Flayer and Necromancer: the first enemies of a new type of foe, The Undead. Despite their clumsiness, poor reflexes and stupidity, the undead are a terrifying force that assaults the morale of your characters, making them more likely to flee and suffer heart attacks. They are immune to bleeding, injuries and fear effects, and gain cumulative accuracy bonuses as they surround and gang up on you. Fear not, for the undead are especially vulnerable to fire and burning effects! The Adventurers {STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/44335286/3da573585425bc06990f3210182d39aab743c41e.jpg Skillful and diverse characters with a passion for questing, tomb raiding and righting wrongs. There are 5 different types of adventurers, each with their own fighting style and tactics: The Berserker, Protector, Tomb Raider, Mage and Cleric. The Swamp Hag {STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/44335286/be93554015dac0903feb35053f1bf2cce8b06795.jpg The Swamp Hag is the arena’s second boss enemy. An elf with a dark heart and grudge against the empire, the Swamp Hag has emerged from her solitude within the swamps of Breedmarsh to unleash hordes of undead and poisonous rainfall upon you and your gladiators! Items,...

Fortnightly Update #3: Mobile Ready, Optimization and DevOps

Greetings Gladiators! This update ought to be a short one! During the last 2 weeks, we shifted our focus from adding new content to polishing up what we have, preparing the game for mobile, and developing our workflow tools and ‘under the hood’ stuff (for example, our DevOps pipeline and testing framework). The project received a long overdue optimization: the total build size of the windows version has shrunk from 1.1GB to approximately 650mb. The game is now available to play on android, and can be downloaded from our Itch.io page. If you're looking for something to do during your morning commute, we’d love for you to try out the mobile version and give us your feedback! Changes List Improved the ‘Knock Back / Dazed’ animation for characters that get hit by a charge or knock back effect: now they will be knocked directly away from the knock back source. Better high ground seeking AI logic for Imperial Marksmen enemies. Update the icon art for many passives, backgrounds and abilities. Added particle effects to the glow rings around level nodes. Imperial Veterans use Charge less aggressively. Fixed a bug that allowed characters to sprint through other characters and obstructions.

    Fortnightly Update #2: Enemy Improvements

Happy Halloween Gladiators! Over the last two weeks, we focused heavily on improving the enemy characters and their AI. Imperial enemies received a massive overhaul in their attributes, equipment and tactics, and will now fight like a professional, military unit. We created 2 brand new imperial enemies: The Imperial Auxiliary and The Imperial Triarii. Imperial enemies almost always use shields, and will huddle together in tight formations. Lunker enemies also received some love from the team. These little green beasts have gained the ability to leap over your characters into your backline. We also toned down their aggression levels and taught them how to identify and gang up on your weakest characters. We’re also thrilled to introduce the game’s first boss: Imperial Captain Uku’ Toa, an exceptionally dangerous melee fighter. No more spoilers on him for now: you’ll have to face him on day 5 to see what awaits you! For the next week's sprint, we’ll continue to add new enemies and improve old ones. Our backlog of UX/QoL feature requests from play testers is growing steadily larger, so we’ll take the time to implement some of these (for example, fast mode setting, auto-turn end, reorderable character panels, etc). Changes List Populated the Breedmarsh town environment with procedurally generated characters that will move around and interact with each other. Hopefully this brings a bit of life to the swampy hell hole! Added two new imperial enemies: Imperial Auxiliary and Imperial Triarii Added the game’s first boss enemy + encounter: Captain Uku’ Toa and his Triarri guards. Improved the AI of all enemies. Enemies will be more measured in their aggression, work together as a team, delay their turns where tactically beneficial, seek high ground during engagements and closing the distance, and avoid engaging on water and mud. Lunker Younglings gained the ability “Leap”. Imperial Veterans gained the ability “Charge” Added more tips to the loading screen (some of them are ac...

    Our First Fortnightly Update

Greeting Gladiators, Two weeks ago, we publicly released the demo for We Are Gladiators on Steam, and the response has been nothing short of phenomenal. We want to extend our heartfelt gratitude to each and every one of you who has participated, played, and provided invaluable feedback. No amount of words can't express how grateful we are for the volume of bug reports, feature requests and feedback we've received from all of you. Your enthusiasm fuels our passion to create the best gaming experience possible. Changles List Based on your feedback, we've been hard at work making improvements to the game. Here's a list of the most consequential changes we've implemented since the demo launch: Inventory space is now unlimited, instead of being restricted to 100 slots. When one of your characters is killed in combat, each item on the killed character has a 50% of being recovered and added back to your inventory, instead of being lost and gone. Enemies that you kill in the arena have a 25% chance to drop their items as loot (25% chance is rolled for each item). Completely overhauled the layout, art assets and functionality of the Armoury, Library and Hospital features. The Inventory window no longer exists on its own. Your inventory view is now embedded within the armoury, library and character roster pages for easier access. You can use ability books / learn abilities simply by right clicking an ability tome icon in your inventory within the character roster page. No more navigating to the library, dragging in a character, dragging in a book, confirming the choice, and having the character immediately ejected after learning. No more drag/dropping characters into the hospital. You can select which character to use bedrest/therapy/surgery on directly within the hospital page. This should make using the hospital faster and more intuitive. Updated the views/layout of the post combat screen where you view your character stats and loot. Loot and character stats are now on a si...
