Chronicles: Medieval offers a vast sandbox where you can command armies and leave your mark on the Hundred Years' War. Explore historically grounded Europe, making your name through strategic battles and epic adventures.

About this game

Chronicles: Medieval puts you at the center of a vast medieval sandbox, where the battles you fight, the army you build, and the decisions you make are what shape the course of your journey.

Combat is at the heart of it. Hundreds of soldiers clash around you, banners against banners, steel against steel. You command your troops in real time while fighting alongside them, rising from an unknown soldier to someone this era will remember.

Write your story, make your name!

A world built from history

Step into a medieval Europe shaped by the conflicts of the Hundred Years' War. A grounded world that rewards the curious.

Built on technology that makes every landscape feel rich and credible, accompanied by an authentic soundtrack.

Move through a turbulent era that never stands still. Factions shift in power, enemy forces patrol the landscape, and unexpected events unfold as you travel.

Intense battles await you

Hundreds of soldiers clash around you. Cavalry hammers into infantry lines. Banners clash, steel meets steel. This is medieval warfare, and you are in the middle of it.

The battles are demanding. Timing, formations, positioning, and the nerve to hold your ground when everything around you is falling apart.

In Chronicles: Medieval, you are both commander and warrior. In the heat of battle, you issue orders to your troops without ever leaving the fight. Position your Longbowmen at the right distance. Drive your cavalry into a crumbling line. Then draw your sword and enter the fight yourself.

Every unit fights with purpose. Longbowmen, men-at-arms, crossbowmen, cavalry, and more - each with a distinct role, each responding to your orders in real time.

Your choices, Your journey

Medieval Europe is full of opportunity, and what you do with it is entirely up to you. Where you ride, who you fight, how you build your character and your army are your decisions, so where does your path lead?

Every choice leaves a mark: the banner you raise, the army you build, the battles you pick; all of it shapes your reputation and brings you one step closer to glory.

Chronicles: Medieval builds the stage, and you write the story…

A game that grows with you

Chronicles: Medieval launches into Early Access as the foundation of something larger. The world will deepen, the systems will grow, and the community shapes what comes next. New content, new features, and modding support are part of the road ahead.

This is just the beginning.

Dev Diary #4: At Your Command, armies in Chronicles: Medieval.

A Closer look at Army managementIn our previous Developer Diaries, we've explored the politics and rivalries that drive conflict, and how battles play out in Chronicles: Medieval. This time, we're turning our attention to your army. Join Nikki Kuppens, Senior Game Designer, for a closer look at how you'll obtain, maintain and expand your army, alongside plenty of newly captured footage. As always, everything shown is still a work in progress. Before we kick off the show we'd also like to share an update on our release plans. After carefully considering our development goals for our ambitious game, we've decided to move the Early Access release of Chronicles: Medieval to early 2027.  The additional development time will allow us to further refine the experience, strengthen core systems, and start our Early Access journey in the best possible place for both the team and the community. Thank you, as always, for your continued support. Now, let's turn back to the matter at hand: managing your army in Chronicles: Medieval: We also have a blog to accompany the video. So, if you're unable to watch it, or simply want a little more detail on army management you can dive into the written piece by Steven, Björn and Nikki below. Enjoy!IntroductionWelcome back to another Developer Diary for Chronicles: Medieval. Last time we talked about the battlefield, including how to deploy, command and maneuver your units in battle. In this update we are focusing on the units that make up your army, which types of units there are, where you can raise them, how they gain experience and how they are promoted to more capable and resilient units over time.We will first start with setting the historical context for our approach to units and here to do so is our very own Björn Rüther, our combat mocap supervisor and HEMA-enthusiast. Historical BackgroundFrom Antiquity, with its sometimes gigantic armies, to the Middle Ages with their comparatively smaller forces, military service and methods of r...

Dev Diary # 3: Into the Fray, battles in Chronicles: Medieval

A Closer Look at BattlesIn our previous developer diaries, we've explored the politics and rivalries that drive conflicts in Chronicles: Medieval. This time, we're turning our attention to the battlefield. Before diving into Gareth's developer diary, join us for a closer look at our battles with some newly captured footage, and a more in-depth look by Gareth himself. It offers a glimpse of the scale, atmosphere, and warfare we're building. Plus, it has a nice little sneak-peak at the end. As always, everything shown is still a work in progress, and yes, arrow trails will be optional. Players will be able to toggle them on or off as they please. If you're unable to watch the video, or just like a little more details around battles, we've also put together a written piece by Steven and Gareth below. Enjoy! IntroductionHello again, and welcome back. Steve here, senior writer on Chronicles: Medieval. Before I hand you over to Gareth to walk you through how a battle in our game is actually fought, I thought I’d offer another small slice of history to set the scene. In September 1342, an English force of perhaps three thousand men under William de Bohun, Earl of Northampton, found itself in Brittany with the entire French royal army marching to destroy it. Bohun had landed to support an English-backed claimant in the Breton civil war and was now badly outnumbered, deep in unfriendly country, with no realistic prospect of relief. The sensible thing to do was leave. He didn't.He chose a field outside the town of Morlaix and anchored one flank against a wood. He dismounted his men-at-arms and stood them in a line with his archers on the wings. This was a tactical arrangement the English had been refining since Boroughbridge twenty years before, and which would, four years later, win Crécy. And then, on the night before the battle, he set his men to dig. They dug pits in front of the line. Small, shallow, covered with sticks and grass. Nothing elaborate. By morning the ground in...

    Chronicles: Medieval - Gameplay Reveal

One year ago at Summer Game Fest, we officially revealed Chronicles: Medieval to the world.Since then, we’ve seen one topic come up again and again from our growing community: “What do the battles look like?” and “When will we see gameplay?” We wanted our first proper gameplay reveal to be epic, and there felt like no better stage to return to than Summer Game Fest. So in case you missed the showcase, check out the brand-new gameplay reveal trailer here: Our reveal gives you a first look at battles in Chronicles: Medieval, from infantry clashes and battlefield atmosphere to some of the larger-scale battles we’ve been building. And did you recognize the voice in the trailer? We’re super happy to announce: Lars Mikkelsen is portraying Johannes Gutenberg in Chronicles Medieval. He will narrate parts of the journey our players will go on, and we’ll be sharing a little more about him very soon.Battles and Lars Mikkelsen aren’t the only things we’re revealing today. We’re also excited to finally begin showcasing the Holy Roman Empire! While Chronicles: Medieval is heavily inspired by the era of the Hundred Years’ War, our game is not intended to be a strict historical recreation or a direct simulation of that conflict. Instead, our goal is to create a medieval sandbox inspired by politics, warfare, and tensions of the period, where players can write their own story.Chronicles: Medieval extends beyond the familiar conflict between England and France. The Holy Roman Empire is a major part of our medieval Europe, and we wanted Summer Game Fest to also be the moment we finally shared the first glimpse into that side of the battlefield. To go with that, we’re also revealing an amazing new artwork focused on the Holy Roman Empire. And yes, of course we’ve prepared these as wallpapers, ready to decorate your screens right here! We’ve seen all the discussions, questions, theories, and excitement from the community over the past year, and we truly appreciate all the support and pat...

Dev Diary #2: Lords, Power, and War.

Welcome back to our second Developer Diary for Chronicles: Medieval. In this entry, we’ll be taking a closer look at the systems and layered mechanics that shape the living world of the game. From the foundations behind simulation and immersion to the philosophy guiding their design. But before we dive into the details, our senior writer Steven will give a short historical preamble on the thinking and inspirations behind these systems, before senior designer Álvaro walks us through how they come together in-game:Historical preambleHello! I'm Steve, senior writer on the project, and before I hand over to Álvaro to walk you through the systems that animate our world, a few words on why those systems look the way they do.The medieval world was not a kingdom in the modern sense. There was no Whitehall, no civil service, no standing bureaucracy stamping the king's will onto every village. A king in 1313 ruled, in practice, only as far as his most powerful vassals were willing to ride out for him -and those vassals ruled their own lands much the same way. Power flowed downward through bonds of homage and upward through bonds of obligation, and the whole structure was held together less by law than by personal loyalty and the ever-present threat of revolt.A Work in Progress shot of POIs showing a village, town, city and a Capitol Consider that the king himself had no fixed capital in the way we would understand one. The royal court was more of a traveling society, a great moving household of clerks, cooks, hounds, wagons, and armed men, processing from manor to manor and abbey to abbey, eating its way through the countryside and dispensing justice as it went. To be governed, in 1313, often meant waiting for the king to arrive in person -and to govern meant being, almost constantly, on the road. A realm was not a map. It was a network of relationships, walked and re-walked, year after year, by the people who held it together. This is the texture we have tried to capture. A fa...
