Assemble your team and prepare for strategic battles in Expeditions: Samurai, where every choice shapes your journey in early access. Navigate the treacherous politics of 16th-century Japan with stealth, diplomacy, or force.

About this game

Expeditions: Samurai is an expansive roleplaying game set in our world during real historical events, with an intricate, branching story and a vibrant cast of characters. At every turn, you will be faced with life-or-death choices that will challenge your resolve.

Create the character you want to be and choose your own path through history. Even the smallest of your decisions can have far-reaching consequences for yourself, your crew, and - in many cases - the people of Japan.

In the year 1600, the navigator William Adams arrived in Japan. He would soon become the first European granted the title of "Samurai".

In Expeditions: Samurai, William Adams never leaves England; you will beat Adams to the punch and sail to Japan aboard the Dutch frigate De Albatros.

You arrive in Japan as the newly elected leader of a motley crew of privateers and are quickly swept up in an ongoing civil war that is nearing its climax. Navigate the politics, intrigue, and drama of feudal Japan as you and your crew catch the attention of powerful warlords whose struggle will determine the future of the nation.

Every crewmate has their own story to uncover - if you manage to earn their trust. Build your relationship with each companion into a meaningful friendship, a lifelong rivalry, or possibly even a new love.

Outnumbered but never outgunned, engage your enemies on your own terms in a fast and freeing turn-based combat system where movement, attacks, and interruptions can all play out simultaneously.

Use stealth and clever gadgets to toy with your opponents. Split up your team to position them in real-time and set up devastating ambushes. Utilize a vast array of weapons and abilities to maintain the upper hand - from mainstays of the pirate arsenal to iconic Japanese weapons.

Craft your own items and experiment with different loadouts to survive deadly and diverse enemies.

For the first time ever in an Expeditions game, experience the tense combat and deeply branching narrative of Expeditions: Samurai in drop-in/drop-out co-op. Play in single-player as your own Captain Flynn, or invite your friend and play as a pair of twins.

In co-op, talking to characters at the same time lets you wrestle for control of important decisions or compete for a companion's affections. Coordinate sneak attacks or clever combat maneuvers; throw a distracting firecracker at just the right time to let your partner sneak past a sentry, or execute a flawlessly timed double stealth takedown.

    Version 0.5.3 Patch Notes

While the team continues to plug away at the major Update 1, which will address a wide variety of feedback we've received thus far, we have selected a few fixes and one improvement to the input system that we've deemed high-priority enough to merit its own patch. We hope this will improve your experience while you wait for more content to be released!Mouse Input is Now RebindableLeft Mouse is now bindable in the Options menu. This means you can rebind Select and Primary Action to whichever configuration makes most intuitive sense to you. For example, if you miss the input layout of previous Expeditions games, you can now bind them both to Left Mouse and bind Toggle Camera Rotation to Right Mouse.Additional Fixes and ImprovementsImplemented logic that translates input to other keyboard layouts such as AZERTY.Corpses now only highlight if they have loot. You can still interact with them to pick them up, they just won't highlight, making it easier to track if they have loot or not.Fixed tutorials not showing up on the world map.Major optimization to the world map dialogue photobooth.Memory optimizations to the loading screens.Fixed some abilities not showing correctly in the Class screen after transitioning between levels.Fixed two soft-blockers in specific branches of Etienne's and Piet's camp dialogue, where making certain choices would cause the dialogue to get stuck.Fixed certain cases of missing voice-over, most prominently the leader of the Kirishitan thugs in Incensed Against Us.Fixed a memory leak in the quest system.Optimized character textures.

Dev Diary #3 - Stealth Gameplay

While you wait for Update 1, which will address all common feedback from the initial Early Access version of Expeditions: Samurai, we thought we would take this opportunity to talk a little bit about how the core gameplay of Samurai has evolved from Rome, and the thinking behind these changes.Every Expeditions game undergoes a few gameplay changes compared to previous instalments, both to keep the series feeling fresh, but also to support the themes of each game's distinct setting and story. This dev diary will delve into the most significant change we've made to Samurai, being the addition of stealth mechanics, and show how this new aspect of the game plays together with other new features.Stealth and Advanced AI BehaviorHaving noticed an enemy ambush in the forest ahead, players have split their party and snuck them one by one into position to start combat on their terms and execute a devastating counter-ambush.The major new element in Samurai is the inclusion of stealth systems and associated AI behaviors. Now, Samurai is not and will never be a full stealth game, but the addition of stealth is a way to make enemies act more human and to make the transition between real-time exploration and turn-based combat more smooth, dynamic, and interesting. In Conquistador, when you got into a fight, there was a loading screen and you would be put straight into combat. In Viking and Rome, you would enter combat directly from dialogue or by hitting a manually placed trigger. In both cases, as soon as the game determines that combat should begin, all enemies immediately know what's up and where you are.Taking away this omniscience introduces the dynamics of stealth: enemies now need to see you, or see an ally who's already fighting you, or hear you moving around, hear shots being fired, etc. This adds a new dimension to the sort of tactics and cunning you can use to give yourself an edge. How Our Stealth WorksEnemies have heard a gunshot, and have moved to investigate the sourc...

    Preview of Upcoming Improvements

Hello everyone! If you've been hanging out on the Discord, you've probably picked up a lot about what we've been working on since the Early Access release. We also dropped a few notes about our plans at the end of the last patch notes, but just in case you missed all of that, we'd like to summarise what you can expect soon. There will also be some new information in here for those of you who do keep up with our Discord.Rebindable Mouse InputsOn mouse and keyboard, you will soon be able to rebind Select, Move, and Interact inputs separately, and you are allowed to bind any of them to the same button so you can set up the controls exactly as you please.Party SizeOne of the main pieces of feedback we've received is that people miss the 6-person party from the previous games. After trying it out, we do agree that the 6-character party is a more comfortable size - it means you can cover all your main combat roles and still have space to bring another couple of companions just because you like their vibes. Not every level will allow a 6-person party: generally, you can expect to still bring 4 people to smaller levels such as castles or manors, but most levels will allow 6 characters.Stealth TweaksStealth gameplay is still not quite where we want it to be. Your feedback has helped us hone in on what changes we need to make. Some highlights:Enemies will enter combat more readily when they see you attack their allies.Characters will stay in sneak mode when executing a stealth takedown.Ranged sneak attacks will get a cooldown.Sneak attacks against aware or alert enemies will not deal bonus damage.Overall Game BalanceYou have pointed out that the game is very easy in general right now. We want to make sure that Story mode remains easy while increasing difficulty on all other settings. These changes are being made at the same time as enemy numbers are being increased to account for the larger party size in most levels.Trade Screen UpdatesThe trade screen will show the actual value...

    Version 0.5.2 Patch Notes

Change ListThis section lists the fixes included in this patch. These are the immediate high-priority issues we have prioritised based on your reports so far. Below this section, you can find a list of future issues and feedback we are prioritising next.Gameplay UpdatesBludgeoning damage will no longer kill an enemy outright, and is only able to incapacitate during combat. Unless you hit an already incapacitated enemy, of course. Utilise this to complete optional objectives that involve knocking enemies out instead of killing them.Various fixes to the Ikigai side quest:Fixed so that the two quest targets can't be farmed for loot (sorry not sorry).Dead characters should no longer respawn when you re-enter the level.Note that the dead bodies of the quest characters will respawn at their spawn points if you re-enter the level.Added some more variety to the enemy types in the level to improve the combat experience.Updated Morale across the board so that enemies don't get Panicked or Disobedient so quickly. Now they should only lose Morale when an ally dies in their vicinity.Bug FixesFixed an issue where you could get stuck in combat after loading a save file.Fixed Notifications not showing in World Map outside of World Map dialogue.Fixed World Map events not always triggering.Fixed Piet and Etienne sometimes incorrectly following you in Incensed Against Us, causing the fight to bug out in... interesting ways.Removed a blocker in a conversation with Alessandro that would happen after choosing the "\" option in Etienne's quest.Removed Tora-hime's clairvoyance; she will now only approve or disapprove of actions once she has been recruited.Fixed that the tutorial for how to use tactical items was displaying incorrect binding when explaining how to select a target.Fixed an infinite loading screen that could be encountered after getting a Game Over from getting killed by Cabral in Perils on the Sea.Fixed a co-op issue in Perils on the Sea where one player could go to another ...

Expeditions: Samurai Now Available in Early Access!

It's been a bit of a whirlwind for us since we announced Expeditions: Samurai two months ago. The game had already been in development for nearly 4 years at that point, and it was an incredible relief to finally be able to talk about some of what we'd been through, the new studio we had built, and above all the what the fourth game in the Expeditions series would bring to the table: a rich and colourful setting in Feudal Japan, a dynamic gameplay loop with lots of room for player creativity, and above all full 2-player campaign co-op.Today we have released the game in Early Access, and you can now buy it at a generous discount for the first week if you want to help support our project and have an opportunity to give your input on the game while we still have time to act on it!We're unbelievably excited to share this game with you and collect all your thoughts and suggestions. If you're still unsure whether this game is for you, we've collected a few early press previews for your perusal:Expeditions: Samurai Early Access Preview—Rising Sun"Expeditions: Samurai genuinely hooked me with both its gameplay and its presentation. It’s a deep and complex RPG that also never really feels slow or overly bloated. It maintains all the hallmarks of the best RPGs while also feeling new and innovative."Expeditions: Samurai successfully takes the long-running series East – Big Boss Battle (B3)"Minor, Early-Access-solvable issues aside, Expeditions: Samurai is easily the strongest entry in a strong series. The writing is fantastic, with plenty of dramatic, well written (and voiced) story beats littered throughout. The willingness of the developers to drop you into a world that explains itself through actions and conversation, rather than babying you or dropping a wall of text on you, is welcome, and I’m genuinely looking forward to seeing it continue its journey through Early Access."https://turnbasedlovers.com/review/expeditions-samurai-preview/"So far the game has been a lot of fun...
