About this game

Disclaimer: Holy Grain is a narrative game with a large amount of text that addresses sensitive topics such as abuse, drug use, or discrimination, among others.

Holy Grain is the game your parents would not approve. It's a cult of absurdity and dark humor. It's an endless event explorer. A roguelike (or more like, roguelite) with a slightly different twist than the usual. It is a quirky blend that tastes like chocolate ice cream on a hot summer afternoon. In this game, you'll step into the shoes of an average kid whose life's sole purpose is to plant carrots and live a peaceful existence. The counselor, a senior with an anarchist mindset, will guide you toward a life of adventures and misfortunes. You'll swap carrots for soldiers and serene sunsets for bloody battles. All to topple the tyrant on the throne: Albert Smallnose.

But truth be told, Albert Smallnose is just the beginning of a list of increasingly difficult and epic challenges. In Holy Grain, you'll encounter 5 meticulously designed factions to spice up your adventure. You'll have to learn to rule them and, above all, to take down their supreme leader when the time comes.

  • Villagers: Not much to say about these folks with a poor diet. Countryside people with a lot of pent-up rage and little patience for nonsense, ready to whip out the guillotine at any sign of authority.
  • Crusaders: Silk-clad barbarians. Colonial conquerors who settle in any land they deem fit in the name of the king. But beware, it's best not to mess with them, they're pretty buff.
  • Outlaws: Definitely not a bunch of low-quality folks or smelly armpits. This crew consists of war veterans who decided to go solo after realizing the riches they could attain without a king to obey.
  • Goblins: Surprisingly, the world extends beyond lands filled with humans. These friendly green critters inhabit the most barren and horrible lands you can imagine, scavenging any resource they come across. Sure, they might be a bit clumsy and scrawny, but there's strength in numbers, and they'll follow anyone who can utter two sentences without choking.
  • Dark Elves: Evil, mysterious, and dangerous beings... Or so the classic fantasy narrative would have us believe. Maybe they do harbor some secrets, or perhaps they're just elves with dark skin. You'll have to find out for yourself.

Holy Grain can be divided into the following gameplay phases, composed of the following mechanics:

  • Exploration: You'll traverse an extensive world divided into regions with specific climates. Each climate is a world unto itself, and every place you choose to visit will have its own challenges. The key is to plan your journey considering your army's resources and the dangers lurking around. You never know what awaits in that house on the horizon.
  • Events: Each time you progress within a region, you'll face a semi-randomly generated event. Many factors will decide its outcome, but it's your decisions that will determine whether you proceed wisely or not.
  • Combat: Eventually, you'll have to resort to force to emerge victorious from some events. After all, you have an army with you for a reason. In these fast-paced and frenetic battles, you'll need to make quick decisions and keep your combat skills sharp to avoid being executed by the enemy commander. Remember, if you die, it's game over.
  • Final Boss: This entire journey will lead you to the continent's supreme leader where you're located. Each continent has a specific structure, meaning some are more complicated than others. However, the ruling faction (and hence, the final boss you'll face) and the faction you lead also matter. What you need to know is that, to advance in the story and complete the last continent, you'll have to defeat each of the final bosses.

With that being said, buckle up because the advisor is waiting for you. He mentioned something about a revolution; I'd go talk to him to see what he's got to say.

    Patch 4 - "Moonwalk Cavalry :o"

Good night my fellow traveler, come here, let's have a talk... It's nice to finally relax for more than 2 days without thinking the game is broken. Of course there's bugs here and there, and I hate that, but at least now the game has achieved a minimum level of quality required for a game. Today I was exploring the game a bit and made a few changes. For instance, I fixed three bugs in combat: - In some cases archers didn't shoot. - The famous moonwalk of the cavalry is now, I THINK THIS TIME IS FOR REAL, fixed. - That endless loop of fleeing-fighting-fleeing-fighting from archers and artillery is now fixed, Then I made a couple small changes to make the game more enjoyable: - Duels are more difficult, but you got more energy to spend. - Enemy army squads are now smaller in size, thus having more squad diversity. - Archers aim for cavalry first, then to infantry. - Your hero does more damage to units (Last update I decreased damage too much). - Volcanic biome is not that dark now. And that's it, now to sleep.

    Patch 3 - "Goddamn goblins..."

Hello again! We are bringing a new little patch that balances the game even further: - Goblins are easier to defeat and easier to befriend by doing certain actions. - All artillery now does less damage. - Increased available units in villages, strongholds and castles by quite a lot. - Small increase in recruiting prices. - More probability of rare events to appear. As you can see, this time we didn't focus on making the game easier, but rather more enjoyable while adding difficulty and decreasing frustration. As I said on the last update, this is something that will be changing for at least the v1.1.0, so any feedback is very welcomed. Thank you all for playing the game!

NEW Update: 1.0.1 - "Welcome to hell, kiddo"

Hello everyone! The first update is here, along with the small patches we've been releasing. We've been quietly reading and listening to all your feedback—mostly negative feedback—and we truly appreciate it. Many of you mentioned that the game felt too difficult, and we’re sorry for that. We do apologize, because we didn't tested the game thoroughly enough, which led to a rough experience for some of you. That, combined with a few bugs that messed with the game experience, made the first impression less enjoyable than we had hoped. But no more crying—it's time to fix things. We believe we've now found the perfect balance, though I'm sure it will keep improving. We've also made combat rewards dynamic, so defeating bigger and stronger armies now yields better loot. On top of that, we fixed a bug in the army window that probably drove some of you nuts. This is just a small update, and we have more planned for the future, with new features and content coming to the game. For those of you enjoying it so far, I’m incredibly happy for that. And for those who didn’t enjoy it or requested a refund because of a bad experience, I’m truly sorry Holy Grain didn’t meet your expectations. I hope to see you again in the future, playing and enjoying Holy Grain! ^^ That’s all for now. We’re listening and tracking everything to make Holy Grain better and stronger. Hope you have a blast playing!!!

    Patch 2 - "Balancing issues..."

Hello everyone! We've been testing Holy Grain in our spare time and have decided to make a few changes on exploration gameplay. - First of all now there's more chance of rare events to appear. - Resting in camp now is WAY MORE effective. - Enemy armies are weaker. - Less presence of outlaws in first level. - Villages are only generated with the native faction of the continent (or outlaws). All of this should make the gameplay more playable, fun and easy.

PATCH 1 - "You fucking idiot..."

Hello everyone! Holy Grain launched 12 hours ago and I'm still trying to heal from all the work we have done to finish this project. I noticed an odd behaviour from units in combat, so I checked the code and... well, yeah, the title sums it up. Luckily that's fixed and units should behave normally when working together. On top of that I changed salaries of units so they are cheaper to mantain, as it was kind of difficult to keep up. That would be all, have a lot of fun playing Holy Grain!
