July Update
New Demo OutHello! I just released the new demo on both the public Steam page and the beta branch of Paper Sky. If you encounter any bugs or glitches, please do let me know anywhere: here, on the Steam forums, or on Discord.I had to cut quite a lot of mechanics and features because I wanted to keep the demo as dense as the last one without spoiling too much of the story, challenges, etc...Also, the Mac version of the demo isn't out yet because the pipeline to port everything to the Mac API isn't fully complete and would require some additional dev time. So if you're a Mac user and you really want to play the new demo, please do let me know! There won't be an update next month, as I have quite a bit of administrative work and some health related concerns to take care of. But the next content update will showcase the progress toward the end of the game's production. All the new mechanics are pretty much final and well established now. They just need a good visual polish and maybe a few game design passes to make everything more intuitive. For instance, there's a full fast-travel world map mechanic in the demo, but nothing in the game actually tells you how to use it yet, so it's totally possible to play through the whole demo without ever using that semi-open-world aspect of the game.Alright, that's it for this phase of development. Now I just have to finish the rest of the game and release it!Side note: The demo will change and improve through this final dev phase. And I aim to have the final demo be the meat of the early game but without any story/cutscene/dialogues or animations.Read full article on Community Announcements (Crumble)Patch NotesOfficial
June Update
Hello, I was supposed to release the new demo publicly this month, but unfortunately it got delayed again. I keep adding new features, more content, and letting the scope creep get completely out of control. While all of these additions are already available to the beta players, I still don't feel comfortable releasing the demo publicly just yet. Here are some of the things I worked on over the last month.Fast Travel (Finished)Fast travel is now fully implemented and accessible through the Book UI. Using it briefly shows a loading screen to make transitions smoother on lower-end hardware. If you're playing the game linearly without backtracking, you'll never see a loading screen. They only appear when fast traveling between already discovered locations.Flight Minigame (Work in Progress)I've been working on a new minigame that will be included in the demo. It's heavily inspired by the Flash game Flight, which was actually one of the biggest inspirations that eventually led me to start making Paper Sky.The reason this feature is still a work in progress is also the main reason I'm not ready to release the demo publicly yet. Minigames in Paper Sky are completely optional, but they're highly recommended. They introduce completely different gameplay mechanics, offer a nice change of pace, and reward you with exclusive paper plane models and new Words that can power up your plane.Wall Climbing and SlidingThis started out as one of those accidental mechanics that naturally emerged from the custom physics and movement system.Instead of leaving it as an obscure discrete trick for players to discover, I decided to fully embrace it by adding dedicated climbing and sliding behaviors. Everything depends on your movement and camera angle relative to the wall, so it should feel intuitive without requiring any special inputs. Most importantly, it preserves your momentum, which keeps the flow intact.Player Ghosts... and Multiplayer? Here's where the scope creep really starts.I've add...Read full article on Community Announcements (Crumble)Patch NotesOfficial
April & May Update
I'm going to cover both the April and May updates, as I've been hard at work on the new demo and have been pushing the updates back further and further.Preview (Beta Access) of the New Demo ReleasedThe preview of the new demo is now live on Steam for beta testers. It's still a rough build, with some audio issues and plenty of gaps in the level design. It's also incomplete, as I plan to expand it little by little until it's ready for a public release. If you have a Paper Sky beta key, simply download the latest patch on Steam and jump in. The current build offers about 10 minutes of gameplay showcasing the new movement mechanics, UI, and online features. Here are some of the new additions I haven't shared yet:Desert World (Moebius-Inspired)The visuals are almost final. I'll still be doing some optimization and cleanup on the post-processing, as it's a bit messy right now. Flora and fauna have not been added yet.Hold and JumpAs mentioned in previous updates, this change may be a bit controversial. However, internal testing has been very positive. You can now hold the jump button to build speed and release it to jump. The longer you hold it, the faster you'll go and the higher you'll jump. While pressing, the ball will also "stick" to the ground and walls, redirecting its momentum along the terrain. If you're about to crash, you can turn into a ball and hold jump to preserve your speed and flow through the environment. The Book (New Game Menu)I've regrouped all progression and player utilities into a book that can be opened at any time. You can scroll through its pages and even grab them with the mouse from the bottom corners.Message upgrades, as well as skin and model customization, can only be accessed while resting at a checkpoint.Write and Read Messages AnywhereYou can now read and write messages anywhere in the world, similar to the Dark Souls message system. Giving and receiving likes increases your social score, unlocking new upgrades and customization options.Over ...Read full article on Community Announcements (Crumble)Patch NotesOfficial
February Update
Quick update this month! Another update will follow in a few days to share details about a special eventPaper Sky is participating in. Let’s dive in:Slight delay for the new demoAs mentioned in last month’s update, I had some personal matters related to my dog that slowed development a bit. Because of this, the new demo originally planned for today will be slightly delayed. I may still be able to release it early to beta players for the upcoming event mentioned below. The core movement mechanics have evolved significantly, and even a short 5 minutes demo of the new content would be extremely valuable for the final stretch of development. Player feedback will help refine the mechanics and level design before I bring in professional paid testers later on. (this was an aspect I regretted not doing for my previous game)Refactoring leveling mechanicsA good amount of time went into refactoring systems to make them more scalable long-term. One challenge I ran into is that progression systems that modify procedural values like speed changes or adding movement abilities such as double jump, can quickly become difficult to maintain without careful structure.Since I see myself more as a technical artist than a programmer, this required a fairly extensive refactor of that part of the codebase. The good news is that it’s now fully completed and built around a cleaner interface, which should make future iteration and balancing much easier without the requirement of having to cross-reference old code or even opening any code tool.Dog updateMy dog was scheduled for surgery last week, but a small eye injury shortly beforehand created some uncertainty about the timing. Thankfully everything went smoothly in the end, and she’s now recovering well.Read full article on Community Announcements (Crumble)Patch NotesOfficial
January Update
Let’s kick off the new year with some small Paper Sky updates.Asynchronous Multiplayer GameplayLast month I showed you the final backend solution to handle all online and offline messages. Since then, I’ve been finalizing how players see, read, and write messages for others.Quick reminder of how it works: players can leave letters in the world. When you open one you discover new words and can unlock any of them if you have available points. Each word has bonuses that complement the different paper plane models. You can think of words as difficulty sliders. If you’re struggling with a challenge, another player might have left a message like “Try Love”, pointing you toward the best power-up for that challenge.Words are unlocked and written at checkpoint towers, large landmarks that also permanently unlock fast travel to that area.Exploration is rewarded at every scale, and everything works fully offline since messages are downloaded as part of the game files.Reading a player’s note will also show their username (Steam / Nintendo ID, or custom if that's something players want but it will sadly have to be hidden by default to avoid nasty messages), their paper plane skin and model, and of course their message. This makes player messages a real part of the gameplay: helping others through challenges, pointing to secrets, or just leaving something funny.Demo Phase 2Alright, probably the best news this month: a date for the new playable Phase 2 demo.I haven’t published the Phase 1 beta to the public demo branch, as the mechanics have changed too much for it to make sense. The new demo will release first to beta players, then to the public branch once I’m happy with it.I’m aiming for March 9th for the beta release. Everything will be new: different parts of the world and new mechanics.Maybe I will add Steam achievements as well? (they would count towards the demo of the game)Doggo StuffOn a more personal note, one of the dogs is preparing for a major surgery that was planne...Read full article on Community Announcements (Crumble)
